WASHINGTON — Harry Potter fans are getting their first look at the upcoming TV series about the young wizard and the world of Hogwarts.
On Tuesday, the official Instagram account teased a look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, dressed fully in his Gryffindor cloak and wand.
“Tomorrow,” the official Harry Potter account on Instagram said, teasing a potential trailer coming soon.
The HBO show officially began production in mid-July 2025. Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout have been cast as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively.
The newcomers were cast as part of an open call led by HBO in 2024. Showrunners revealed that they were reviewing over 32,000 audition tapes received in response to the original casting call.
The cast members join John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Nick Frost, and Paapa Essiedu, who are set to play Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Rubeus Hagrid and Severus Snape. Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse also round out the cast in recurring roles as Quirinus Quirrell and Argus Filch.
Ahead of taking the mantle of Harry Potter, McLaughlin received some words of encouragement from Daniel Radcliffe, who originally portrayed the young wizard in the film franchise.
“I just wanted to write to him to say, ‘I hope you have the best time, and an even better time than I did — I had a great time, but I hope you have an even better time,'” Radcliffe said on “Good Morning America” in November.
The former “Harry Potter” star, who portrayed the character across eight films from 2001 to 2011, emphasized he did not want to overshadow the new generation of actors taking on the iconic roles.
“I do not want to be a specter in the lives of these children at all,” Radcliffe said.
Radcliffe was around McLaughlin’s age when he began filming the Harry Potter films, which became a global phenomenon and grossed billions of dollars worldwide.
When asked about potentially appearing in the new series, Radcliffe said, “I don’t think so.” He has previously stated he plans to watch as an audience member.
When is the new ‘Harry Potter’ series coming out?
The series, based on J.K. Rowling’s iconic novels, is expected to premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
The TV series will be a new adaptation of the original novels, and J.K. Rowling will serve as an executive producer on the show.
HBO describes the series as a “faithful” adaptation of the books, with each season bringing Harry Potter to new and existing audiences.
