ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Staff members at an Englewood hospital organized a free wedding ceremony for a couple whose 11-year relationship was suddenly cut short when the bride received a devastating cancer diagnosis.
Aliana and Bailey Gleason were married at HCA HealthOne Swedish after medical staff learned of their engagement, which occurred just two days before the ceremony. Aliana is being treated for a rare sarcoma that has spread to her spine, with limited treatment options available, according to Matt Turrie, a nurse manager in the hospital’s oncology department.
“She has a very rare sarcoma that has gotten to her spine. Unfortunately, not a lot of treatment options,” Turrie said.
The couple had been together for 11 years and had long planned to get married, but they delayed their wedding until they could afford their ideal celebration.
“11 years and we have wanted to get married for a long, long time, but we always said that we would do it when we had enough money for a nice ring and all the decorations we wanted and everything,” Bailey said.
The recent medical developments prompted the couple to reconsider their timeline.
“With some recent developments in our lives, we are thinking that life is short and that we want to be married,” Bailey said.
When hospital staff learned of the engagement, they decided to provide the wedding as a gift to the couple.
“There is not a lot you can always do, so when there is something you can do, by supporting the family, supporting the patient, being able to put on something like this, a wedding, a celebration,” Turrie said, describing the staff’s motivation for organizing the event.
Turrie praised Aliana’s resilience throughout her treatment.
“A lot of fight that we have seen the past couple of days. Hasn’t been the best news, but every day she wakes up, and she is smiling,” Turrie said.
For the couple, the ceremony represented a promise to face their challenges together.
“To always stand beside him, even through the hard stuff,” Aliana said in her wedding vow. “We are going through some [of] the hardest things you can go through right now in our lives, not just medically, in every aspect and… it was a promise to just stand next to each other and face the storm together.”
Aliana expressed gratitude for the hospital staff’s gesture.
“I’m just blown away. It was amazing and made me feel really supported and see the goodness in people, besides just the few I know are good,” she said.
Despite the circumstances, both expressed contentment with how events unfolded.
“It feels like it was supposed to be this way,” Aliana said.
Bailey agreed, adding, “It doesn’t feel like it’s not the wedding we wanted, it feels perfect.”
The couple offered advice based on their experience.
“Once you find the right person, don’t let little things get in the way. Don’t let little fights slowly chip away at the magic that you have found,” Aliana said.
“I wouldn’t change any moment for anything,” Bailey said.
“Me either,” Aliana responded.
