Fannin County emergency crews rescued a hiker near Springer Mountain after he was injured Monday.

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. — Emergency crews rescued an injured hiker Monday from the Appalachian Trail near Springer Mountain amid a dramatic temperature swing, Fannin County emergency management officials said.

The hiker had begun his journey Sunday and spent the night on the trail near the shelter at Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. After sustaining an injury, he was unable to make it out of the woods on his own, prompting a response from rescue crews.

Rescuers reached the hiker and assisted him safely out of the area.

Conditions deteriorated sharply between the start of the hiker’s trip and the rescue, officials noted. Temperatures near Springer Mountain had reached around 66 degrees Sunday but had plummeted to 26 degrees by the time crews reached the hiker Monday, with snow falling and a light accumulation on the ground.

The rescue comes amid the start of the Appalachian Trail thru-hiking season. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy announced this month that the A.T had 16.9 million recreation visits in 2025. The trail spans 14 states and nearly 2,200 miles with hundreds of access points.

Springer Mountain sits within the Chattahoochee National Forest in north Georgia and draws both day hikers and long-distance backpackers each year. Emergency responders warned that the terrain surrounding the trail is rugged and remote, often requiring rescuers to cover significant distances over steep terrain on foot.
