Sister Francis Dominici Piscatella, who holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest nun, added another candle to her birthday cake this week.

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. — Sister Francis Dominici Piscatella, who holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest nun, added another candle to her birthday cake this week as she turned 113 years old.

“I’ve given up counting my years,” she said in an interview with WABC.

Piscatella was born in 1913. She joined the Order of the Sisters of Saint Dominic, in Amityville, New York, in 1931, when she was 17 years old. An accident in her childhood had resulted in the amputation of part of her left arm, but she said she was determined to succeed as a nun.

“I was a Dominican sister,” she said. “I had to show them that the fact I had one arm couldn’t in any way impede me.”

Not only did she keep up with her sisters but she also went on to teach countless others. She has served the church for more than nine decades and was also a high school teacher and a professor at Molloy College in New York for 52 years.

“She’s very sweet,” said her great-great niece, Alexa Grimle. “She has a lot of great life advice.”

At her birthday celebration this week, Piscatella received a proclamation from Pope Leo, who is the 10th pope to be elected in her lifetime. She said faith, family and good fortune have given her a beautiful life.
