The recall is due to potential issues with the vehicles’ liftgate gas spring cylinders, according to the NHTSA.
WASHINGTON — Mitsubishi is recalling more than 108,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to potential issues with liftgate gas spring cylinders, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this week.
The April 20 recall affects 102,815 Outlanders manufactured between 2014 and 2020, and 5,231 Outlander PHEV, which is a plug-in hybrid, between 2018 and 2022. This is an expansion of an August 2025 recall that affected about 90,000 vehicles.
The vehicles’ liftgate gas spring cylinders might corrode and lose pressure, which can result in a gas spring cylinder rupture or the liftgate falling unexpectedly, according to the NHTSA recall alert.
Saltwater could penetrate and accumulate in the dust cap of the liftgate gas spring, leading to corrosion of the cylinder, which could become significant over time, the recall says.
Mitsubishi is aware of four warranty claims and reports of this happening in the U.S. between November 2025 and February 2026. No accidents or injuries occurred in these incidents.
The August 2025 recall affected vehicles in an area of the U.S. with high road salt usage, known as the “salt belt.” The new recall includes vehicles outside the salt belt region.
The NHTSA estimated that 1% of the 108,046 recalled vehicles have this defect.
Mitsubishi will replace the left and right liftgate gas springs for free. Notification letters will be mailed to owners by June 17, 2026. Owners can also contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820 and reference recall number SR-26-001.
