A TikToker posted a now-viral video of family photos on the shelf at a Goodwill, sparking a mission to return them to the musician and artist.
WASHINGTON — After a TikToker’s video went viral when she found photos in a Goodwill of Jill Scott, the musician and artist offered up an explanation for how that happened.
The TikTok video, posted March 16 by content creator @whatshannahinto, showed the family photos — some framed and some not — at a Goodwill. The video was titled “The saddest thing I’ve ever seen at goodwill” with a caption that added, “This actually makes me sad … someone’s memories just sitting on a goodwill shelf.”
Commenters started pointing out that some of the photos show Grammy winner Jill Scott. As of Thursday, that video has more than 6 million views.
A few days later, the woman who found the photos posted an update saying she had returned to the Goodwill to buy the photos that were still there with the intention of returning them to Scott’s family.
“I have been reading some of your comments saying that some of these photos could be worth money. I don’t care,” she said. “I know that photos are very special and meaningful to some people, so all I want out of this is to make sure they get back to her and her family.”
At that time, she said she was still working to contact Scott’s team. On Wednesday, Scott herself posted to the social media platform X with a short explanation.
“How does one’s personal pictures end up in a Goodwill?” she posted. “Welp, moving to a new home. My Mommy moved. We’re all grateful to get the pics back. I’ll let you know when they arrive. Thanks again.”
This isn’t the first time that a stranger has found a celebrity’s old family photos in an unusual place. Nearly a year after Ricki Lake lost her Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires, her old family photos surfaced at a flea market in December. When the woman who bought them realized what she had, she reached out to Lake, an actress, producer and TV host.
“I just can’t believe the magic that is my life. It just feels like there’s somebody looking out for me, because this doesn’t make any sense,” Lake said at the time, according to People magazine. “I’m so touched and I’m overwhelmed.”
