A three week series in Pine Lake is bringing women from across cultures together to share personal histories, music, and community during Women’s History Month.

PINE LAKE, Ga. — Women’s History Month is creating space for women across cultures to share their personal histories through conversation, music and community.

The three-week series, called “Our History Is Now – Voices Carry,” will take place three Friday nights in March, starting on March 13, and is free and open to the public.

In an interview with 11Alive, one of the event organizers and former Mayor of Pine Lake, Melanie Hammet, says the series grew out of concern that women’s stories and contributions are sometimes overlooked.

“History is made by the voices who refuse to disappear,” said Hammet.

She says the idea began after she read an article about women in the military whose stories were being removed from official websites. The series was born in 2025 and continues this year to create a welcoming space where people can gather, listen, and connect.

“When you walk into the room, male or female… it is Women’s History Month… then you feel valued, and hopefully you feel seen,” said Hammet.

Hammet says each Friday evening features speakers, music, or artistic performances, and food prepared by members of the Refugee Women’s Network Chef’s Club, highlighting cuisine connected to the speakers’ cultural heritage.

Night One – March 13: Crossing Borders, Building Community

Location:  Pine Lake Beach House

The opening night focuses on migration, culture, and the ways women build belonging in new communities. Speakers include Doris Mukangu, director of the Amani Women’s Center, and **Monalisa Moreno**, who will share their personal journeys and the work they are doing to strengthen community connections. The evening begins with music from Joyce and Jacque and closes with a performance from Lisset and Judith Rodés of Cubana Song.

Night Two – March 20: Voices That Carry Us Forward

The second gathering centers on leadership and the experiences that shape future generations. Speakers include Amal Yusuf and Han Pham, who will discuss the ways women are building pathways into leadership and civic engagement. The night opens with music by Elise Witt and concludes with a dance performance by Celeste Miller.

Night Three – March 27: What We Carry Becomes Community

The final evening highlights resilience and the ways women transform lived experience into collective strength.
