Several events will mark MLK Day in Atlanta, the city of his birth he fashioned into the “Cradle of the Civil Rights Movement.”

ATLANTA — Atlanta on Monday marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a cherished holiday in the city of his birth that he fashioned into the “Cradle of the Civil Rights Movement.”

“Atlanta, today we honor the life & legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by reflecting on his courage, his vision, and his call to serve,” the city posted on its social media accounts Monday. “Let’s keep building the Atlanta he believed in.”

The King Center in Atlanta will hold its annual Beloved Community Commemorative Service, named for King’s vision “in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth,” as the center describes it. It begins at 10 a.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church’s New Horizon Sanctuary.

“In the Beloved Community, poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. Racism and all forms of discrimination, bigotry and prejudice will be replaced by an all-inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood,” the center website states. “In the Beloved Community, international disputes will be resolved by peaceful conflict-resolution and reconciliation of adversaries, instead of military power. Love and trust will triumph over fear and hatred. Peace with justice will prevail over war and military conflict.”

The King Center theme for the 2026 King Holiday is “Mission Possible 2: Building Community, Uniting a Nation The Nonviolent Way.”

Speakers at Monday’s service will include Dr. Bernice A. King, MLK’s daughter and the CEO of The King Center.

Other markers of the holiday in Atlanta include the Atlanta History Center’s King Day program, “I Influence the Dream,” which “invites visitors to trace the arc of Atlanta’s role in the Civil Rights Movement over the course of generations.” Hands On Atlanta is holding dozens of volunteer events in the spirit of making MLK Day a “day on, not a day off” — those volunteer opportunities can be viewed here.

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, as well, is holding special crafts and ceremonies throughout the day, including an MLK Birthday Parade & dance party.
