A stray cat named Gabby had been missing for 443 days since Hurricane Helene. Now, she’s reunited with her family thanks to a microchip.
NORTH CAROLINA, USA — On Saturday, Dec. 13, a stray cat was brought into the Avery Humane Society. But, little did the shelter know that the cat had been separated from her family since Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina over one year ago.
The shelter scanned the cat for a microchip and saw that her owners had been searching for their kitty — named Gabby — for 443 days.
Thanks to Gabby’s microchip, she has now been reunited with her loving family before the holidays.
“Microchips are more than just a number; they are a lifeline,” Avery Humane Society said in a Facebook post. “In times of chaos, natural disasters, or even everyday accidents, they can be the one thing that brings a lost pet home.”
However, the shelter warns that a microchip only works if the information attached to it is kept up to date, and urges everyone to check their pet’s microchip.
“That small step can make the difference between heartbreak and a happy reunion,” the shelter said. “After 443 days apart, this family got their miracle — and it all started with a microchip.”
