Alysia Scott, a woman with cerebral palsy, is set to attend a special needs prom and pursue college dreams thanks to $53,000 in TikTok support.
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A Milledgeville woman with cerebral palsy is getting the chance to attend a special needs prom — and pursue her dream of going to college — after an outpouring of support on TikTok.
Alysia Scott says she never expected a simple video about wanting to attend prom would change her life.
“He messaged me on TikTok and he asked me to be his prom date by video,” Scott said, smiling as she talked about her date.
Scott, who lives with cerebral palsy, says she often avoids going out because she does not feel comfortable in large crowds.
“I really don’t like going out because I just don’t feel comfortable around a lot of people. I just like to stay to myself,” she said.
Her condition makes it difficult to use her arms and legs, but she has found connection through social media, using her lips to scroll through TikTok and YouTube. What started as a way to pass time quickly became something more.
“I TikTok for fun and at first I thought it wasn’t going to do anything because it wasn’t getting any views at first,” Scott said.
That changed when her videos began gaining traction, reaching hundreds of thousands of views. Celebrities shared her story, pushing it to millions. Supporters encouraged her to start a GoFundMe to help cover prom expenses like hair and makeup.
Within days, donations surpassed $50,000.
“It makes me even more motivated to see what I have to live for now,” Scott said.
Her mother, Elizabeth Thomas, says the support has been life-changing.
“I feel good to see that she’s happy and it’s uplifting her to keep pushing, to keep going,” Thomas said.
What started as a small fundraiser for prom has now turned into something much bigger. Scott says the money will also help her attend college this summer.
She plans to study psychology and become a psychiatrist, inspired by her own life experiences.
“So I’m going to college to be a psychiatrist. I feel like I want to be a psychiatrist due to life experiences, the stuff I’ve been through, so I just want to help people with their mental health,” Scott said.
Scott says the support means more than just financial help — it has given her confidence, purpose, and a platform to inspire others.
