National Bagel Day: Where to score free or discounted bagels

WASHINGTON — It may not be everybody’s favorite holiday like Halloween or Christmas, but National Bagel Day is still a win for most people. 

The national “holiday” is on Thursday, Jan. 15, and is meant to celebrate the beloved food. 

Bagels are originally a creation of the Jewish community in Poland, first appearing in the 17th century. The ring-shaped breads have since spread across the world, becoming a favorite breakfast food in the U.S. 

Several notable breakfast and quick bite chains are celebrating National Bagel Day with discounts or freebie offers. Here’s where you can get yours (and probably some cream cheese to go with it): 

• Biggby Coffee: Customers can get a bagel with cream cheese for $1 on National Bagel Day with the purchase of any 20-ounce or 24-ounce specialty beverage.

• Bruegger’s Bagels: Members of Bruegger’s Rewards can score a free bagel and cream cheese with any purchase on National Bagel Day. New customers can also qualify by signing up for the rewards program online. The offer is valid at participating locations.

• Einstein Bros. Bagels: The chain is offering a free bagel and shmear with any purchase on Jan. 15. Customers ordering in-store should mention “National Bagel Day” to receive the freebie.

• H&H Bagels: Members of the H&H Rewards loyalty program can get a free bagel and spread sandwich on National Bagel Day. The deal is available when ordering online or through the app, or by scanning the offer at the register in-store.

• Panera Bread: For National Bagel Day, Panera is running a buy-one-get-one-free deal on its Asiago Bagel Stacks. Customers who buy one stack can get a second of their choice for free using the code BOGOSTACK. The promotion coincides with the launch of new breakfast Asiago Bagel Stacks, including the Wake-Up BLT, and a limited-time Stack & Spill game inspired by the menu item.

• Stop & Shop: Through Thursday, Jan. 15, Stop & Shop shoppers can get a free bagel with no purchase necessary by checking in through their GO Rewards account. Nonmembers can sign up in-store. The offer is limited to one bagel per household.

• Western Bagel: The Los Angeles-area bagel chain is offering a baker’s dozen of bagels for $15 on National Bagel Day.
