ATLANTA — A new exhibit is on display for a limited time at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, teaching kids about the legacy of Black fighter pilots from WWII as the young innovators explore STEAM concepts.
Parents can bring their little aviators to the “AIM HIGH: Soaring with the Tuskegee Airmen” exhibition, exploring the history of the fighter pilots while also gliding into the science, imagination and future of flight. The museum stated that the exhibition highlights the achievements of the first Black military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces–trailblazers who defined discrimination, broke barriers and helped change the course of American history.
“Opening AIM HIGH on such an important weekend is especially meaningful,” said Edwin Link, executive director of Children’s Museum of Atlanta in a release. “The Tuskegee Airmen embody many of the values Dr. King championed like resilience, excellence and the belief that opportunity should never be limited by race. Through play-based learning, this exhibit helps children engage with that history in an empowering, joyful way while seeing themselves in new roles and possibilities.”
About five interactive experiences are offered, giving kids a hands-on experience of what it would be like to soar in the sky or work in aviation-related roles. Young aviators can step inside a life-size cockpit with immersive video views of takeoff and landing or guide a plane to safety on a landing strip.
Another exciting feature is the “Black Wings: American Dreams of Flight” installation, which traces the contributions of Black Americans in aviation from the early pioneers of the 1910s to the astronauts of today.
