Three eagles are missing from Dollywood’s Eagle Mountain Sanctuary after storm damage, with efforts underway to protect and relocate the birds.
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — Crews at the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary in Dollywood are searching for eagles that escaped their enclosure, which was damaged during a storm over the weekend in East Tennessee.
The foundation has been working to protect the eagles, CEO Lori Moore said, but three eagles were still missing as of Tuesday evening, WBIR reports.
According to a social media post from Dollywood, a tree near Eagle Mountain Sanctuary was uprooted during a storm Saturday night into Sunday morning, and the tree “compromised” the aviary.
Moore said three resident eagles at the sanctuary were found outside the aviary and took flight. She said team members are deployed to track the birds. One distressed eagle received medical care and is recovering well, Moore said.
All of the eagles they secured were brought to the American Eagle Foundation headquarters in Kodak, located about a half-hour north of Dollywood in East Tennessee.
Moore said the birds were brought indoors for evaluation during their initial transport. The avian care team assesses each bird, then places them within the outdoor aviaries at the headquarters.
Dollywood canceled all “Wings of America” shows on Sunday and Monday because of the damage to the sanctuary. Dollywood is closed Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of April.
The area near the aviary in the park is closed until necessary work is completed, Dollywood said.
