Delta crews are working diligently to reset their operation following significant disruption
ATLANTA — Severe weather wreaked havoc at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Friday night into Saturday morning, where multiple planes were stuck on the tarmac for several hours with nowhere to go.
Many of these flights are operated by Delta Airlines and its partners. The airline tells 11Alive that severe thunderstorms and unforecast significant hail fell at their hub at the Atlanta Airport. This required ground equipment and inspections of more than 50 aircraft on Friday night.
Continual lightning prevented ground crews from safely doing their jobs. The Air Traffic Control ground delay program also contributed to the exhaustion of flight crews’ available duty time, affecting flights early Saturday.
Delta teams are currently working to reset their operation following severe weather impact.
A Delta spokesperson tells 11Alive, “We apologize to our customers, as we know that a delay on the tarmac waiting for an arrival gate is frustrating. Delta people worked through severe weather challenges in ATL that drove gating constraints overnight. The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority.”
