ATLANTA — What would help bring people to South Downtown? Some say free-range imbibing.
Atlanta City Council approved legislation on March 16 to designate several acres in the historic neighborhood as the city’s first open container district. Starting April 15, adults who are 21 years and older will be able to purchase alcoholic beverages and drink them on the sidewalk, streets and other public spaces in the area.
Councilmember Jason Dozier worked on the legislation with SoDo Atlanta LLC, the real estate team behind the ongoing revitalization of South Downtown. Proponents of the plan say that it could boost foot traffic, support business sales and complement redevelopment efforts in the area.
“This is another feather in the cap of making Downtown a destination in its own right,” said Dozier, who represents much of the central business district.
