Attorneys general from 24 states say GoFundMe created donation pages using charities’ names without permission and are asking the company to remove them.
WASHINGTON — A coalition of attorneys general from 24 states is demanding answers from GoFundMe after reports that the crowdfunding platform created donation pages for more than 1.4 million charities without their knowledge or consent.
In a letter sent to GoFundMe this week, the coalition called for proof that the company has removed all unauthorized donation pages within 14 days.
“GoFundMe provides families and communities with the ability to raise money in times of need, but these many unauthorized postings with solicitations confuse donors, while also harming the charities who did not give consent,” Pennsylvania Attorney General David Sunday said. “These unauthorized pages can result in donations not reaching the donors’ intended recipients. Full transparency is absolutely necessary on online platforms soliciting and advertising donations.”
The attorneys general said the pages, created in October 2025, used charities’ names and information without permission, potentially confusing donors and harming organizations that did not authorize the fundraising efforts.
GoFundMe provides an online platform for people to fundraise and solicit donations, including for charities, Sunday said. The website is a for-profit Delaware corporation headquartered in California and is registered with the Registry of Charities and Fundraisers as a charitable fundraising platform.
According to the letter, the company created donation pages for more than 1.4 million charities nationwide, some of which allegedly included inaccurate names, logos and descriptions of the organizations.
The coalition said the pages may have also used search engine optimization practices that caused them to appear above official charity websites or fundraising campaigns in online search results.
State officials said some pages also did not clearly disclose that donations could be routed through a donor-advised fund rather than going directly to the charity listed on the page.
The attorneys general said the practices could violate state charitable solicitation and consumer protection laws, including requirements that organizations obtain consent before using a charity’s name to solicit donations.
In the letter, the coalition asked GoFundMe to confirm it has removed the pages, explain how it prevents unauthorized fundraising pages from appearing online and disclose information that could affect a donor’s decision to contribute.
GoFundMe previously acknowledged concerns about the pages and apologized in a LinkedIn post, saying the effort “caused confusion, concern, and distraction from the vital missions of the very nonprofits we aim to support.”
The company said nonprofit pages will now be opt-in only, meaning charities must choose to participate and complete a verification process before a page is created.
Consumers who believe they may have been misled by a GoFundMe charitable donation are encouraged to file complaints with their state attorney general’s office.
