In a quiet revision to its contract with fliers, United Airlines now says you must wear headphones when listening to music or a video.
WASHINGTON — If you’re passing the time on a United Airlines flight by watching a video or listening to music, you’ll need to bring some headphones, or risk a permanent flight ban.
In a quiet revision on Feb. 27 to its contract of carriage — the legally binding document that fliers agree to when purchasing a ticket — United has added a stipulation requiring passengers to use headphones when listening to audio or video content.
The revision was first reported by CBS News.
The provision, found under the “Refusal of Transport” section of the contract, says anybody who plays audio out loud in the cabin could be removed from the plane, get a temporary flight ban, or be barred forever from flying United.
The airline does have a possible solution for passengers who don’t bring their own headphones onto a plane. On its website, the company says that if they are available, fliers can request a pair of free wired earbuds to listen to their media.
Other airlines often encourage passengers to wear headphones while playing media during flight. However, travel expert Scott Keyes, who spoke with CBS News about United’s policy change, said no other major U.S. airline has gone as far with their rules.
It’s unclear how much latitude is given to flight crews to enforce the new rule. Further, no exemptions were outlined for individuals who may have difficulty adhering to the rule, such as young children.
United did not immediately respond to a request for comment about how the changes would be implemented or enforced.
