Costco is selling a 10-pound chocolate bunny named Pete, complete with instructions on how to smash it with a hammer for sharing or baking.
If your Easter basket plans include making a serious statement this year, Costco may have just the centerpiece — a towering, 10-pound chocolate bunny named Pete.
The retailer is selling the massive seasonal treat, made from semi-solid milk, white and dark chocolate, ahead of Easter. The bunny, which features a floppy ear, white chocolate details and an adorable smile, is designed to be both a ‘basket showstopper” and “egg-stagram sensation,” according to the warehouse retail chain’s announcement.
Pete comes with a playful, and somewhat intense, set of eating instructions printed on the box. Shoppers are advised to either smash the bunny with a hammer, mallet or rolling pin (after wrapping it in a towel), or slice it open with a warmed serrated knife. Once cracked, the chocolate can be passed around or repurposed for baking, hot cocoa or dessert toppings.
According to packaging, the giant bunny contains about 151 servings at roughly 150 calories each, totaling more than 22,000 calories.
Costco lists the bunny online for $112.97, though some shoppers report seeing in-store prices closer to $135 or $140. While Pete is currently sold out on Costco’s website, the chocolate rabbit is still available in select warehouse locations.
The product is made by Maud Borup, a Minnesota-based, woman-owned company known for seasonal confections made with fair-trade certified chocolate.
The bunny should be stored in an airtight container at cool room temperatures, away from sunlight. Whether used as a festive centerpiece or broken into bite-size pieces, the package promises “one giant bunny, a hundred little moments of chocolate.”
