Bebe the parakeet becomes an internet sensation after snorkeling in a homemade submarine, delighting viewers with his adventurous spirit.

WASHINGTON — Bebe the bird is an adrenaline junkie.

With 15 skydiving jumps under his wings, multiple flights in planes, and annual weeklong statewide bicycle trips in Iowa, Bebe and his owner Steven Lawyer wanted to try something different.

“Doing adventurous things with Bebe isn’t new,” Lawyer said.

Lawyer, a lover of all things aviation, and his partner were heading to the Bahamas for a longer than usual trip, so they got the paperwork done to take 6-year-old parakeet Bebe with them. When they were on their trip, Lawyer was hit with an idea.

“We like to snorkel and he likes doing whatever we are doing with us,” he said. “So I thought ‘lets figure out a way to let him snorkel with us.'”

It prompted the creation of what Lawyer calls the “Bebosphere.”

It’s a homemade submarine made from a food-grade plastic container, a 3,000 PSI paintball air cylinder, an oxygen meter, lead weights and a very willing white-winged parakeet.

After many tests, they put Bebe in the mini submarine and let him bob around about 3 feet from the surface. Lawyer said the water was shallow enough he could stand up any time and there were no rip currents.

Bebe and the internet loved it.

“I know my bird, I know what he looks like when he’s nervous,” Lawyer said. “He’s intrigued in that video. He voluntarily went into the tube. It was apparent he was content just like he is after the skydiving. For lack of a better word, he’s sort of jazzed, he’s excited and prances around in a happy way.”

The video of Bebe snorkeling blew up online, resulting in nearly 600,000 likes and thousands of comments in two days.

“The literal exact opposite place bro is meant to be,” one commenter wrote and got more than 40,000 likes.

The reaction shocked Lawyer, and he said he never expected it to grow the way it has.

“I had this video and figured I’d post it for fun,” he said. “All of a sudden I’m getting messages from people I don’t know about it.”

He had to debunk claims the video was AI by showing off the Bebosphere and explaining how it works. Even so, he said he’s glad people are getting a kick out of Bebe’s activities.
