After opening with much fanfare three years ago across Georgia, Whataburger announced it is closing two of those underperforming locations.

A Whataburger spokesperson said the company is still expanding across their 17-state footprint, but part of that growth means reviewing every location. And sometimes, that review leads to closures.

In Georgia, the Dahlonega location on Riley Road and the Athens location on U.S. 29 will both close on Dec. 15.

The company says employees will be supported and given the option to transfer to nearby stores.

They also say this helps them focus on the locations performing the strongest — and that more restaurants are still on the way, including new ones in Suwanee and Carrollton.

Whataburger first came to the metro Atlanta area in November 2022 when it opened its first location in Kennesaw.

There are now Whataburgers across the metro — in cities such as Buford, Commerce, Covington, Cumming, Dawsonville, Kennesaw, Monroe, Newnan, Snellville, Thomasville, and Woodstock.

The only Atlanta restaurant opened in January 2024, at 2955 Cobb Parkway Southeast in the Vinings area. A guy named Rudy won Whataburger for life by being the first customer. He arrived the night before and stood outside.
