What’s Next For Atlanta United?
Atlanta at a Crossroads
Atlanta Latinos Magazine– Atlanta United is at a crossroads. A team that entered the season with plenty of talent and loads of promise has had a disappointing season. Atlanta has six wins in twenty-two matches. The manager was fired over a month ago. Three of the top players were transferred in the past few weeks. The team just got bounced from the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night.
Sounds bleak, right? As Lee Corso is fond of saying, “not so fast my friend.” There may still be hope.
Atlanta currently stands tied for 9th in the Eastern Conference, which is just outside of a playoff spot. However, the path to a playoff spot is clear and within grasp. Start winning games and earning points, Atlanta has the ability to rise to the 7th seed in a short amount of time, as Orlando City currently holds that spot and has just three more points than Atlanta.
With the transfer of Thiago Almada, Giorgos Giakoumakis, and Caleb Wiley, how will Atlanta United compete? The MLS summer transfer window opens in a week on Thursday, July 18th. Atlanta now has Designated Player (DP) spots and loads of cash available to spend.
Speaking of cash available, Atlanta reportedly received over $50 million in transfer fees for the three forementioned players. That puts Atlanta in a strong financial position, allowing the front office to make some bold moves and infuse talent into the roster.
All to say, hope is not lost. There is still plenty of season left for Atlanta to turn this ship around and make some noise. Who does Atlanta bring in and how fast do they jell. The answers to those questions will make for an interesting second half of the season. Stay tuned. Hope is not lost.
