Google says it will pair a new data center in LaGrange with “long-term investments in local energy affordability and environmental stewardship.”
LAGRANGE, Ga. — Google on Tuesday announced plans for a new data center in LaGrange, promising to pair it with “long-term investments in local energy affordability and environmental stewardship.”
In a release, Google said the new facility in Troup County would be “one of the most energy-efficient in the industry.” The company told 11Alive it will be located at 411 Pegasus Parkway.
The release did not specifically detail how much it will cost to construct the facility. Google did however say when they build data centers, they cover 100% of the costs for power at the site and “any infrastructure needs driven by its operations.”
“Google will not pass the costs of its infrastructure growth onto local families,” the company said.
Google added as part of its project in LaGrange, it will give $1 million to the Groundwell SOUL (Save On Utilities Long-term) program for “critical home safety and efficiency upgrades for local seniors and families, helping to lower energy costs and improve resilience.”
It also says it operates under a company commitment to “replenish more freshwater than it consumes” with data center projects, and will partner with the Trust for Public Land to “restore the habitat along the Chattahoochee River by removing invasive, water-thirsty plants.”
Google already operates one data center in Georgia, in Douglas County.
Both the city manager of LaGrange and the president of the Development Authority of LaGrange gave their endorsement for the data center project.
“We are excited to welcome Google to LaGrange and look forward to their partnership with our community,” said LaGrange City Manager Patrick Bowie in a statement. “Google’s decision to locate here fills a vital void in our utility system left by the closing of our largest electric customer. We are working with their team to invest in infrastructure improvements that will benefit all utility customers while exerting downward pressure on rates.”
Google’s regional head of data center public affairs, Jen Ryan, said the investment in LaGrange “represents another chapter in our deep partnership with Georgia — a state that continues to lead with innovation and vision.”
“More than just building a data center, our goal is to be a good neighbor, and that starts on day one by investing in local priorities, creating opportunities, and working with residents to build a strong future together,” Ryan said.
