Customers flooded social media with accounts of declined transactions as well as blank or missing balances when logging into the bank’s app and website.
A technical outage struck Capital One on Friday, blocking customers from viewing their account balances online and rendering debit cards unusable at the height of the afternoon, according to reports from affected users and data from the outage-tracking website Downdetector.
Reports of the disruption surged sharply around 4:15 p.m. ET, with Downdetector logging approximately 4,000 complaints at the peak. Customers flooded social media with accounts of declined transactions as well as blank or missing balances when logging into the bank’s app and website.
Capital One’s customer service account on X acknowledged the disruption Friday, telling affected users the bank was working to restore access.
“We understand this isn’t ideal, and are working diligently to have your digital access back up as quickly as possible,” the @AskCapitalOne account wrote in reply to frustrated customers. “Thank you for your patience as we get things back up and running!”
The bank did not immediately provide additional details about what caused the outage, how many customers were affected or when service was expected to fully resume, though some users on X reported that their issues had resolved.
Capital One is one of the largest banks in the United States, with tens of millions of customers. It was not immediately clear whether the issue affected all Capital One customers or was limited to specific account types, regions or platforms.
Capital One has not disclosed a timeline for a full resolution. Customers experiencing issues were directed to the bank’s social media channels for updates or encouraged to call the bank if needed.
