Dr. Alexandra Estrella was named the new superintendent of the state’s largest school district in March.
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The new superintendent of Gwinnett County Public Schools will continue her listening tour Wednesday night with the next in a series of town hall meetings.
Dr. Alexandra Estrella was named the new Gwinnett superintendent in March, arriving from the superintendent post of a Connecticut school district and with a deep background in public education leadership, including in New York City.
She has since embarked on a mission of community outreach, saying before she makes any big changes in the state’s largest school district she wants to hear directly from teachers, students and parents about their needs.
Dr. Estrella has said her top priorities include addressing absenteeism, graduation rates and literacy.
She’s held three of five planned meetings so far, with the fourth scheduled for Wednesday night with District III at Peachtree Ridge High School.
Her most recent meeting was in District V on Tuesday night. She addressed the district, which has a large Latino population, in both English and Spanish.
Parents who spoke to 11Alive said they appreciated seeing that, and parents whose first language is Spanish were particularly excited to connect with someone speaking in their first language.
Dr. Estrella said she wanted to “differentiate what I do for every cluster based on what is important for them and what are the things that are of priority.”
“I know because there’s a large Latino community here, it was important for me to have my presentation in both Spanish and English so that they heard my voice in their language and they weren’t hearing it from somebody else translating it to them,” she added.
The final of the five meetings is on Thursday evening with District IV at Parkview High.
The other previous meetings were April 27 with District I at Archer High and April 24 with District II at Discovery High.
Dr. Estrella’s goal is to come away from these meetings with more perspectives as she looks to craft a 5-year strategic plan for the district.
