Atlanta United Defeats Orlando City 1-0

Atlanta, GA – Don’t look now, but Atlanta United has found its groove.  The defending MLS champions extending their winning streak to four on Sunday at home by defeating Orlando City FC 1-0.

The lone goal of the game came in the 14’ of the match.  On a transition breakaway, Pity Martinez smashed a laser beam past the Orlando goalkeeper for his first goal of his MLS career.  The 2018 South American player joined Atlanta United at the beginning of this season.  Ending his nine game scoring drought brought much relief to him and the 68,000 United faithful.

Tito Vallalba was credited with the assist on the goal.  It was his third of the season, which leads United.  Besides that, Villalba provided much energy to the team, leading many attacking forays, including four shots on goal for himself.  For his efforts, he was awarded Man of the Match.

The defense was solid again, earning yet another shutout.  It was the fourth shutout in a row and fourth clean sheet for United goalkeeper Brad Guzan.  Guzan was credited with four saves, several of which were spectacular efforts.

United has moved into a playoff spot as the 5th place in the Eastern Conference.  Its next returns to action on Wednesday, May 15th at Vancouver.

Notes…Pity Martinez earned the Golden Spike award for his performance in the game…Jeff Larentowicz entered the match in the 76’, which marked his 400th appearance in MLS…Justin Meram entered in the 90’, making his first appearance in an Atlanta United uniform after being acquired from Columbus Crew earlier in the week…attendance was announced as 68,152.
