Atlanta Thrashes Dynamo 5-0

Josef Martinez Scores Two Goals

ATLANTA, GA – Entering Wednesday night’s match against Atlanta United, Houston Dynamo had lost four of its last five.  Things did not get better for Houston.  In the sixth minute, Houston lost forward Alberth Elis to a red card for violent conduct when he bumped the referee.  From then onward, Houston had to play a man down.

United took full advantage.  The game winning goal came in the 27th minute from Darlington Nagbe.  It was his first goal as a United team member.  Julian Gressel and Emerson Hyndman were credited with an assist.

Two minutes later, Brandon Vazquez added the second goal.  United would hold the 2-0 lead into halftime.

After the break, it was the Josef Martinez show.  Martinez scored in the 60th and 79th minutes and nearly added a third goal later.  Martinez now has 15 goals on the season, putting him alone in second place in goals scored this year.  He is four goals behind league-leader Carlos Vela.

United dominated time of possession 71.5% to 28.5%.  The defense was solid, allowing five shots total with only one of those on target.  Brad Guzan earned his 9th shutout of the year, which leads MLS.

The win moves Atlanta into second place in the Eastern Conference.  Atlanta plays again at home Sunday against D.C. United.
