The 2026 Winter Paralympics will commence with a historic and controversial Opening Ceremony on Friday. Here’s how to watch.
VERONA, Italy — Less than two weeks after the end of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the 2026 Winter Paralympics are about to officially kick off.
The Winter Paralympics’ Opening Ceremony will mark the start of the Games on Friday. Although some competitions, such as qualifiers and tournament matches, began days earlier, the celebratory Opening Ceremony will officially kick off the Games.
The main event will be historic, the first-ever Paralympic Ceremony hosted in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Arena di Verona (Verona Olympic Arena) was built around 30-50 CE, predating the Roman Colosseum.
When is the Opening Ceremony for the Paralympics?
The 2026 Winter Paralympics Opening Ceremony is on Friday, March 6. The Opening Ceremony officially begins at 2 p.m. Eastern on USA Network. A preview show will start at 1:30 p.m. Eastern on the same channel.
A replay presentation will air on NBC on Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m. Eastern.
Ceremony already controversial before it starts
Several nations have announced they’ll boycott the Opening Ceremony due to recent decisions made by Games officials.
The International Paralympic Committee announced it would allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in the Games under their respective countries’ flags, reversing their ban on the athletes after the 2016 Russian doping scandal and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The countries boycotting the Opening Ceremony include Ukraine, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Germany.
What to expect from the Winter Paralympics
Like the Winter Olympics, events will be held in Milan, Cortina and other Alpine venues in northern Italy.
The Paralympic Opening Ceremony will be held in Verona at the Verona Olympic Arena, a Roman amphitheater built in 30 AD that can host more than 12,000 spectators.
