WASHINGTON — More than 440,000 Honda Odyssey cars have been recalled after 25 injuries were reported inside the minivans.
Honda Odysseys made between 2018 and 2022 are subject to the recall, with Thursday marking the first day that drivers can search their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration database. The government agency’s website is NTHSA.gov.
The faulty airbags impact the car’s second and third rows, where side and curtain airbags are built in to protect passengers during a crash. Instead, in certain cars, these back-row airbags were deployed after more minor stresses such as “driving over potholes, speed bumps or road debris,” according to the NHTSA’s safety recall report. As of April 2, Honda had 130 warranty claims for the cars, while 25 people reported injuries from the minivan’s airbags.
The recall is largely precautionary, with NHTSA estimating only about 0.1% of recalled cars will actually experience the airbag defect.
Honda began alerting dealers to the recall last Friday, and the car company expects to issue its notices to car owners on May 25.
