Easy to use, functional, clear audio The mic arrived, and I did some testing. I didn’t realize that it had two settings, along with off. You can make the forward pick up more narrow. PLUS! I tested it with my Canon Vixia HF R500 camcorder, and the audio was clean and loud. Then I used an adapter (purchased on amazon) that allowed me to connect to my Moto G5s Plus with ZERO issues. (Advise: I have noticed that Android does not play nice with external mics in the default camera app when shooting video. It defaults to built in mic, and can’t be changed. However, Facebook/Instagram/etc along with audio notation apps for mobile podcasting all work perfectly fine.)
Not a shotgun mic Sound quality is reasonably good, but it has some strange handling noise. When I investigated, I found that (a) the battery holder bounces around inside the sleeve around it making dinging noises and (b) it’s not actually a shotgun mic.A proper shotgun microphone has a single element at the rear of the interference tube. This has one at the rear, and another halfway down. How they’re mixed depends on the position of the selector switch, but the one halfway down never seems to shut all the way off, and it interferes with the operation of the interference tube. The result is that this picks up a lot more off-axis noise than it should. And, because there is no vibration isolation anywhere in the microphone it picks up huge amounts of jolts and other noises, making it extremely impractical for the types of situations where shotgun mics usually shine.
Best mic under $50 The sound quality of the mic blows me away. As a college student and audio engineer, I can appreciate a budget mic that sounds good. Although the price and audio quality are amazing, the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. It is very light and the battery compartment/XLR connection is very cheap and feels like it might snap one day.Only had it for about and month, so I will update this review about its longevity later. Wish there was a 4.5/5.0 star option.
