After the first effects of a winter storm, here’s where the ice layer is clearest.
HALL COUNTY, Ga. — A winter storm that moved across much of the country left its mark in Georgia on Sunday morning, with icy, white roads primarily in the northeast of the state.
If you’re waking up around metro Atlanta or north Georgia and wondering where the ice storm left its greatest impacts, here’s a rough overview. Don’t try to take this list as quite definitive — you might be able to find, for instance, little icicles at your home in Cobb County — but rather as the best indication of where traffic cameras and our reporters are seeing the most ice.
Again, that’s mostly to the northeast — up GA-400, up I-85 (though at a certain point many north Georgia counties did not get significant icing) and east toward, and beyond, Athens.
Counites with high ice impacts in Georgia early Sunday:
- Hall
- Clarke
- Forsyth
- Dawson
- Lumpkin
- White
- Habersham
- Stephens
- Franklin
- Hart
- Elbert
- Madison
- Jackson
- Barrow
- Oconee
- Banks
There are also some counties where there was a bit of ice, particularly in their northern parts, though the on-the-ground ice accumulation wasn’t as visible as in the counties above. Some of those include:
It’s also worth noting we don’t have eyes on Oglethorpe; it could be in the right zone for ice as well.
Notably, some north Georgia counties where there’s usually winter weather did not appear to have any substantial icing:
- Rabun
- Towns
- Union
- Fannin
- Gilmer
