As the potential for ice and snow nears, a plumber breaks down how to keep your pipes from bursting.
ATLANTA — A small, steady stream of water could save homeowners hundreds of dollars while also preventing frozen pipes during cold weather.
“Stagnant water will freeze and bust at 25 degrees inside the pipe,” said Matt Firtha, owner of Zippy Plumber.
He warns that simply letting a faucet drip may not be enough to prevent damage. This takes on more significance starting this weekend as a winter storm is forecast for North Georgia, followed by below-freezing temperatures into early next week.
“We want to see a nice, steady stream like this. More than a drip. You don’t have to keep it full on flowing and waste water, that’s too much, that’s a waste of water, but a nice steady stream, a little bit more than a drip,” Firtha said.
Firtha also recommends opening under-sink cabinet doors.
“Leaving the cabinet doors open and exposed to the ambient temperature inside the house will keep the pipes from freezing,” he said.
And for homes with outdoor faucets, he suggests running water through those lines as well.
“We’re not wasting water, we’re just keeping the pipes from freezing,” Firtha said.
