Charles Brooking enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old.
LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A trip for Old Glory through tight quarters inside Mission Barbecue in Wilkes-Barre Township shows the volume of people who came out to wish U.S. Navy veteran Charles Brooking a happy 99th birthday.
“Makes my heart really feel good to see all my friends, realizing that they made the trip up here for my special day,” said Brooking.
Fighting for America during WWII, Brooking enlisted at just 17 years old.
Over a 10-year career, he traveled the world, served on PT boats as a .50-caliber machine gunner, and thankfully made it home as part of the winning side.
“Thankful that we won the war, and I’m very thankful to all my friends who backed me up and pay tribute not only to my service, but to the service of all veterans,” said Brooking.
Along with cakes and time with friends, Brooking also received a congressional proclamation acknowledging his service and sacrifice.
“For that, we cannot thank you enough, and the least we can say is happy birthday, and we’ll see you next year for your 100th,” said Leo Russo, 8th Congressional District Director of Outreach.
While Charles hasn’t had to fight in a long time, he does have one more battle to take on.
A recent cancer diagnosis has Brooking wanting to take a few more trips before his number is up.
Capping off a life that he says has been one well worth living.
“Respect your country. If you decide to join the military, that’s one of the greatest things you can do,” said Brooking.
