Crews plan to use new ice-clearing equipment for the first time.
Crews at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will, for the first time, use new ice-clearing equipment to keep runways open as an expected ice storm hits the area.
A Winter Ice Warning has been issued for the Atlanta metro area, and the forecast currently calls for 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice to form between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.
Despite that, officials at the world’s busiest airport believe planes will be able to take off and land over the weekend.
“I’m confident we will keep the airfield open,” said Christopher Jackman.
Atlanta now has new equipment that has been used in northern airports like Chicago and New York.
The crews will be able to scrape and brush the ice off the runways and clear it to the sides, allowing for planes to operate safely.
Meanwhile, airlines have waived cancellation and change fees for travelers this weekend.
Currently, only 1% of flights at Atlanta have been canceled, while 4% have been delayed. On Saturday, so far, about 4% of flights originating at Hartsfield have been canceled.
