Atlanta United Defends Home Turf
Atlanta, GA – Atlanta United won 3-1 Saturday night at Bobby Dodd in an exciting match.
Atlanta United recorded the first goal. Tito Villalba scored in the 16′ minute on an assist by Yamil Asad. It was Villalba’s sixth goal of the season. He converted a turnover deep in the opposing territory in to a quick strike goal.
Columbus Crew knotted the score at 1-1 in 26′ on a goal by Federico Higuain. It was his seventh of the season.
Miguel Almiron untied the score in 67′ with a brilliant goal. He got possession of the ball at midfield and took it the rest of the way. The assist was credited to Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, his second of the season.
Josef Martinez tacked on a goal in the 88’ minute to put the nail in the coffin. He entered the game as a substitute in the 61’, to the chants and delight of the crowd. It was his first home appearance and first goal since coming back from his quad injury.
Atlanta United held on to the lead from there and picked up the three points for the victory.
Almirón earned his third consecutive Man of the Match and Golden Spike Award. The game was entertaining with lots of frenetic, back and forth play.
Notes: Carlos Carmona was issued a yellow card in the 21′, meaning he will be suspended for the next match…Miguel Almiron scored his team leading eighth goal in the 67’…Yamil Asad extended his team leading assist total with his eighth assist in the 21′. Atlanta United’s captain, Michael Parkhurst, earned a victory against the team he had been captain of for the past three years.
For the second time this week and the third time this season, Atlanta United’s match was delayed due to lightning.
