The transit agency has said the new network and service layout will be its “largest and most comprehensive redesign since the 1970s.”

ATLANTA — MARTA on Saturday will debut its much-anticipated NextGen bus route network and the Rapid A-Line set to connect southeast Atlanta to Downtown.

The NextGen redesign goal is to provide more high-frequency service on busier routes — as much as tripling the number of routes that run every 15 minutes to 17. MARTA also anticipates 11 routes with buses every 20 minutes.

It comes with a reduction in some other routes, but officials have said “generally people are happy with the increased frequencies they’re seeing.” MARTA has touted NextGen as the “largest and most comprehensive redesign” for the bus lines since the 1970s.

Rapid-A, meanwhile, is the realization of a long-sought goal for rapid bus service utilizing dedicated lanes — the boldly-painted new red lanes people have seen around Downtown and areas that will be serviced by the line like Summerhill.

Rapid-A will be a five-mile roundtrip line that connects several Downtown Atlanta stops to the southeast Beltline, going down Hank Aaron Drive to University Avenue.

MARTA bills it as “fast, frequent premium transit service” that will connect with heavy rail stations at Five Points, Georgia State and Garnett.

The hope, also, is that is serves as a proof-of-concept for Bus Rapid Transit, a form of service MARTA has pitched for connecting other corridors in Atlanta.

Last week the transit agency released its new NextGen schedules and pointed riders to its Trip Planner website to get familiarized with the new service. The schedules that go into effect April 18 are also available at this link.

“The NextGen Bus Network is a generational change for transit in Atlanta,” said MARTA Interim General Manager and CEO Jonathan Hunt in a statement. “By tripling the number of routes with 15-minute frequency, and ensuring that is consistent all day, not just during rush hour, we are delivering a bus network that is smarter, faster, and more reliable for all our customers.”

The overall redesign cuts the total number of routes from 113 to 81, but MARTA says it is not cutting service — “many of the routes in the NextGen Network will be more direct serving more locations and have buses coming more often.”

The $2.50 MARTA bus fare will not change, the agency says.
