Atlanta United Dominates DC 3-1

Martinez Sets MLS Record for Hat Tricks

ATLANTA, GA – The Five Stripes from Atlanta put on a show Saturday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  After falling behind from an early DC United goal, Atlanta tallied three goals to claim the victory.  All three goals were scored by Josef Martinez, who leads all MLS goal scorers with 22.

Martinez has been short of amazing this year.

His 22 goals are nine more than any other player in the league.  He is averaging a goal per match, which is a historic pace in MLS.  For his career, which spans less than two years, Martinez has recorded six hat tricks, a record for which he stands alone in MLS history.

Attendance was 45,087.  Atlanta next plays at Montreal on July 28.

Notes….Recent transfer Wayne Rooney made his first start for DC United…Andrew Carleton, a local product from Powder Springs, GA, made his first MLS start of the season for Atlanta, logging 65 minutes of match action…Eric Remedi, the recent transfer from Argentina, made his first appearance for Atlanta in the 76’…Ezequiel Barco did not start for the first time in the last 15 matches.  According to Atlanta’s manager Gerardo Martino, Barco violated team rules and will be held out for next week’s match, too.

Atlanta United Dominates Orlando City 4-0

Atlanta, GA – Atlanta United wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz.  Just three minutes in to the match, Josef Martinez scored his league leading 15th goal of the season.  From then on, it was all Atlanta United.

Not to be outdone, Miguel Almiron scored two goals, both in the second half.  The remaining goal was credited to Ezequiel Barco.  It was Barco’s fourth goal of the season.

The defense was once again stellar.  Brad Guzan, Mr Clean Sheet, recorded another shutout.  He had a lot of help from the back line.  He was also aided by a Mikey Ambrose kick save in front of the goal during the first half.  That play aided in him getting named “Man of the Match.”

United remained unbeaten against Orlando City during the two year southern rivalry.  Orlando has now gone three matches without scoring a goal, dropping their record to 6-10-1.  Atlanta improves to 11-3-4 on the season and increased their league lead in points.  Attendance was 71,932.

Atlanta travels to Dallas on Wednesday night for a July 4th clash with FC Dallas.  FC Dallas is tied for first place in the Western Conference.

Atlanta United vs Philadelphia Union

Five Stripes Win 3-1

Martinez Records Hat Trick

ATLANTA, GA – The Five Stripes got back to its winning ways Saturday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.  Atlanta United won a disjointed match 3-1 against a tenacious Philadelphia Union team.

Josef Martinez recorded the hat trick.  He scored on a cross from Miguel Almiron and added two penalty kicks.  The hat trick was the fifth of his career, tying the Major League Soccer career record.  He accomplished the feat in only 30 games, making him the fastest to reach that level.

The key sequence of the match happened in the 19th minute.  Martinez was fouled in the box.  The referee awarded Atlanta United a penalty kick.  Philadelphia protested the call and delayed the game, resulting in a second yellow card for Alejandro Bedoya.

Then Philadelphia’s Haris Medunjanin completely lost his cool.  He was given back to back yellow cards for dissension.  By rule, both players were “red card” ejected for getting two yellow cards in the same match.

Atlanta played the remainder of the match with a two-man advantage.  Statistically Atlanta dominated time of possession, shots, and shots on goals.  In fact, Atlanta United had an incredible thirty shots on game for the game.

Notes…Martinez assumed sole possession of the MLS scoring lead.  His 12 goals on the season are now three ahead of second place…The Mercedes-Benz Stadium roof was open for the first time this year…Attendance was 45,140…United next plays Charleston Battery on Wednesday as part of the US Open cup series.

Atlanta United vs Montreal Impact

Atlanta United Vaults into First Place With a 4-1 Victory

Atlanta, GA – For 70 minutes, the Montreal defense bottled up the potent Atlanta United attack.  Atlanta then unleashed its potent attack, scoring four goals to close out the game and win the match 4-1.

Atlanta dominated the first half time of possession (77%) but found itself trailing early.  Montreal’s Saphir Taider scored on a header in the 13’.

Coach Martino subbed in Tito Villalba to start the second half.  That seemed to ignite the offense.  Almiron scored his first goal on a penalty kick in the 70’ to tie the match 1-1.

Kevin Kratz then scored the game winner in the 78’ on a free kick.  He had just entered the match in the 74’.  He would later add a second goal on another free kick in overtime.  He was awarded Man of the Match for his two goals on two shots performance.

Almiron added a second goal in the 84’ on a beautiful assist by Josef Martinez.  With that goal, Almiron tied Martinez for the league lead in goals at six.  Almiron was awarded the Golden Spike Award for the match.

Except for the early slip up, United’s defense was once again stellar.  Atlanta won its second straight match, improving to 6-1-1.  With the win, Atlanta takes over first place in the Eastern Conference and leads the league in points.

Attendance for the game was 45,039.
